The face in the mirror slowly removes make-up. Mascara, lip stick, eye shadow disappear with a deft fluidity. Cleanser is applied. The cheap synthetic wig floats from its resting place. A young man looks back at his reflection.
A psychiatrist speaks softly to his client. The client confirms the decision that has been made.... “if that’s what it takes...”.
“SWITCH HIT” tells the tale of the naturally talented but genetically cheated Bobbi O’Sullivan, a pre-operative male-to-female transsexual, who is lured back to the brutal world of boxing, risking all that is important to her, to achieve her ultimate goal.
She will have to fight like a man to become a woman.
Sacked by her boss and cast aside by a father unable to accept her dilemma, Bobbi links up with boxing promoter Ernie Best. Armed only with the brilliant natural skill honed in adolescence by her unforgiving and fearful father, she seeks the financial means to undergo the long, painful process of sex reassignment surgery (SRS). Ernie sensing a marketing and financial goldmine (“The Glamour with the Hammer!”), introduces her to trainer Les Lockwood who, after initial reservations, agrees to take her on.
Les assigns hardened journeyman boxer Trevor ‘Mad Dog’ Morgan as her sparring partner. After initial confrontations, a truce is called as Mad Dog comes to acknowledge and respect Bobbi’s courage and skill in and out of the ring. Mad Dog is the boyfriend of Les’ niece Rachel, a feisty girl with a sad past, and a relationship fast going nowhere. Seeking friendship and conversation long denied, Rachel readily embraces the arrival of the curious Bobbi, enjoying and feeding off this new dynamic in her life. Cautious yet genuine friendships are forged as Rachel and Mad Dog recognize the noble qualities of someone who dares to be different.
But Bobbi’s presence in their lives creates an awkward, emotional triangle from which jealousy and betrayal arise. Ignorance overrides reason and the pain of the boxing ring pales by comparison.
Using her boxing skills as a means to an end, Bobbi battles for the love of her father, the respect of her friends and most importantly, the resolution to the question of her sexuality.
Opportunity presents itself in the shape of the #2 rated contender for the World Lightweight Crown. A Mexican punching machine with thunder in both fists. The marketable but inexperienced Bobbi O’Sullivan is seen as easy quarry for the ambitious aspirant to the title.
Victory will afford her the financial means for SRS. But it also comes at a price. Acceptance and adulation bring their rewards, but to win at boxing is to be a man.
Bobbi now must make her final decision....to grasp with both hands the sexuality that has been long denied her. Risking her new friendships and the love of her father, she sets out to become the woman she knows she is.
“SWITCH HIT” is a character driven story of unusual people in extraordinary circumstances. It is a tale of success against the odds set against the brutal and exciting backdrop of the boxing world as Bobbi O’Sullivan seeks the will and the means to become herself and resolve the riddle of her sexuality.
